Last year Louise Wallis St Mary’s went to Argentina to do some voluntary work. This summer she’s off to Africa!
Louise writes: I’m off in July for two and a half weeks - this summer to Zambia.
Did you know:
- Zambia ranks 165th out of 177 on the world’s poverty index!
- 17% of the adult population are infected with HIV and AIDS!
- Life expectancy is 38.4 years!
- 51% of Zambia’s population are unable to meet basic food needs!
I am going as part of a team to Zambia. We are going to help build an extension and a toilet block on ‘Kiine’ (’Truth’) Primary School. The school is based in an old bungalow which is totally unsuitable for the 122 pupils, spanning 7 grades, who currently attend it. There is only one toilet. The school was founded 10 years ago to serve the adjacent ’shanty town’.
We will also be helping out with two groups who support and feed the street kids of Lusaka. 75% of Zambian households are already caring for at least one child, related to them, whose parents have died of AIDS. A lot of these children end up on the streets.
This is where you come in . . . The team needs to raise £12,000 to complete the project. The more money we raise, the more we can help. Why stop at 2 classrooms when we can build 4?! 100% of the money raised will go to support these projects out in Zambia.
I know it is going to be an unforgettable experience. I am not going to do a fun run, sponsored salsa . . . or sit in a bath of baked beans. I am appealing to you to grab your credit cards and give! We can make a real difference to some children’s quality of life.
